What is a bronze bushings?
Why are bronze bushing widely used in mechanical transmission?
Bronze bushing is a cylindrical or tubular mechanical part made of bronze as the main material. It is usually placed on the outside of shaft parts to support the shaft, reduce friction, absorb vibration and guide positioning. It is a simplified form of sliding bearing with a simple structure (mostly hollow cylinders). It can be designed into different thicknesses and lengths or with oil grooves, oil holes and other structures according to working conditions to optimize lubrication and heat dissipation performance.
Bronze, as a base material, has both metal strength and good friction reduction. Common bronze materials include tin bronze (such as ZCuSn10Pb1), aluminum bronze (such as ZCuAl10Fe3), lead bronze (such as ZCuPb30), etc. Bronze bushings with different compositions can adapt to different loads, speeds and environmental conditions.
Why are bronze bushings widely used in mechanical transmission?
The core reason for the popularity of bronze bushings in mechanical transmission is that their performance is highly compatible with transmission scenarios, which can be analyzed from the following aspects:
1. Excellent tribological properties
Bronze material itself has good self-lubrication (especially the grades containing lead and tin), and can still work stably under insufficient lubrication or short-term dry friction conditions, reducing the wear between the shaft and the bushing;
The surface is easy to form an oxide film, which can reduce the friction coefficient and avoid “seizure” (stuck) between the shaft and the bushing, which is crucial for high-speed or intermittent motion transmission systems.
2. Balance between high strength and toughness
Bronze has higher strength than non-metallic bushings such as plastic and rubber, and can withstand larger radial loads and impact loads, making it suitable for heavy-duty transmission scenarios (such as machine tool spindles and crane gearboxes);
It also has a certain toughness, which can absorb vibration and impact during transmission, reducing equipment noise and component fatigue.
3. Good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance
The thermal conductivity of metal materials is much better than that of plastic or ceramic bushings, which can quickly dissipate the heat generated by friction and avoid performance degradation due to overheating;
Bronze (especially aluminum bronze) has a certain corrosion resistance to water, oil, and some chemical media, and is suitable for humid, dusty or slightly corrosive environments (such as ship machinery and hydraulic systems).
4. Simple structure and low maintenance cost
No need for complex rolling elements or cages, low manufacturing cost and easy installation;
Easy to replace after wear, relatively low machining accuracy requirements for the shaft, reducing the maintenance difficulty of the overall equipment.
5. Adapt to a variety of transmission conditions
By adjusting the bronze composition (such as increasing the lead content to improve wear resistance, increasing the aluminum content to improve strength), it can adapt to different scenarios such as low speed and heavy load, high speed and light load, reciprocating motion, etc.;
