Ni-Hard Wear Plates: Grades, Microstructure, Selection and RFQ Guide

Ni-Hard wear plates are abrasion-resistant white cast-iron components used in selected mining, milling, cement, power, dredging and materials-handling duties. The name “Ni-Hard” refers to a family, not one universal composition or hardness. Grade, section, carbide content, matrix, heat treatment, geometry and operating duty must be considered together.

This guide helps maintenance engineers, materials engineers and buyers compare Ni-Hard grades and prepare a drawing-based RFQ. It does not promise wear life or approve Ni-Hard for impact, welding, pressure or structural service. Final material, thickness, fixing, heat treatment and acceptance must follow the purchaser-approved drawing and applicable standard.

What Ni-Hard is—and what it is not

Ni-Hard alloys are nickel-chromium white cast irons whose wear resistance comes from hard carbides supported by a controlled metallic matrix. ASTM A532/A532M-10(2023) covers a group of alloyed abrasion-resistant cast irons for mining, milling, earth-handling and manufacturing. It includes several classes and types; the purchase order must identify the exact one.

ASTM A532 also recognizes different supply conditions, including as-cast, stress relieved, hardened or softened for machining where applicable. A generic request for “Ni-Hard plate” therefore leaves major technical questions unanswered.

Ni-Hard 1, 2 and 4 are different material concepts

The Nickel Institute’s technical guide NI-Hard Material Data and Applications (11017) explains the relationships between composition, carbide volume and matrix. Ni-Hard 1 and 2 are commonly described as nickel-chromium irons with M3C-type eutectic carbides; their carbon balance changes the relative amount of carbides and matrix. Ni-Hard 4 uses a different chemistry and carbide/matrix concept.

Do not order Ni-Hard 4 by copying a composition from a supplier brochure. Use the applicable ASTM class/type or a purchaser-approved specification. The selected material must also be compatible with part section and duty.

How the main elements influence the alloy

Carbon affects the balance between carbides and matrix. Nickel promotes hardenability and helps control matrix transformation. Chromium supports carbide formation and hardenability, while silicon, manganese and molybdenum can influence solidification or matrix response within a defined grade. These effects are interdependent; no single element provides a guaranteed service result.

Wear mechanism: abrasion is not one condition

Sliding abrasion from fine particles, gouging by coarse rock, erosion by high-velocity slurry and mixed impact-abrasion create different demands. A hard white iron may perform well under controlled abrasion yet crack when exposed to severe impact, poor support or point loading. Provide the actual duty rather than only the industry name.

Geometry, fixing and backing are material issues

Wear plates must be supported and retained according to the equipment design. Bolt holes, countersinks, slots, welded inserts, studs, clamps or mechanical seats concentrate stress. Because white cast iron is not a structural steel, the purchaser must approve fixing geometry and installation method. Do not field-weld a Ni-Hard plate unless a qualified design and procedure explicitly permit it.

Show the wear face, backing face, flow direction, leading/trailing edges, joint gaps, bolt seats and required flatness on the drawing. If backing compound or resilient layers are used, identify the approved product and thickness through the equipment owner’s procedure.

Heat treatment and hardness interpretation

ASTM A532 permits different delivery conditions depending on grade. Heat treatment may develop the intended matrix or support machining strategy. It does not correct shrinkage, inclusions, cracks or poor feeding. The cycle must be developed for the specified alloy and section.

Hardness should be measured using an agreed method, prepared surface and location. A single reading cannot establish carbide distribution, matrix, soundness or wear life. Specify the number and map of readings, permitted variation and any microstructure requirements separately.

Common Ni-Hard plate failure patterns

A failure symptom is not a root-cause conclusion. Preserve component identity and orientation, then review duty, mounting, geometry, material and manufacturing evidence together.

Selection comparison: Ni-Hard versus alternatives

Ni-Hard should be compared with other wear materials using the actual mechanism and component design. High-chromium white iron, manganese steel, alloy steel, rubber/composite liners, ceramics or overlay plate may be considered in different duties. They are not interchangeable by hardness alone.

RFQ checklist for Ni-Hard wear plates

4. Handled material, particle size, impact, flow, wet/dry state and temperature.
5. Backing, support, fixing, hole/seat geometry and installation constraints.
6. Casting tolerances, machining and critical dimensions.
7. Chemistry, hardness, microstructure, dimensions, NDT and traceability.
8. Failure photographs, wear map and service history for replacements.
9. Quantity, variants, packing, destination and shutdown date.

How to compare quotations

Compare the exact material designation, delivery condition, drawing revision, tooling, machining, inspection, marking and packing. Ask suppliers to list assumptions and proposed deviations. A lower price may exclude heat treatment, mapped hardness, machined bolt seats or agreed inspection.

Do not accept a service-life percentage based only on nickel, chromium or hardness. Controlled field trials require comparable positions, feed, hours, installation and failure criteria.

Installation and safety boundary

Follow the equipment owner’s lockout, lifting, confined-space, hot-work and installation procedures. Inspect backing surfaces and mating geometry before fitting. Use the approved bolt/clamp sequence and do not force a brittle plate into an incompatible seat. Wear-trial design and performance monitoring

Wear life cannot be guaranteed from hardness or alloy name alone. If the duty is important or a material change is proposed, use a controlled field trial. Select comparable positions with similar feed, impact, flow and attachment conditions. Record the baseline liner drawing, mass or thickness map, material specification, heat identity, installation date and operating exposure. Comparing one new plate in a different location with an undocumented historical plate does not isolate material performance.

Define the exposure denominator

Calendar days are often misleading because throughput, feed size, moisture and stoppages vary. Where operating data are available, relate wear measurements to tonnes processed, operating hours or another purchaser-approved exposure measure. Record significant process changes, foreign-object events and liner movement. The purpose is not to manufacture a universal wear-rate claim; it is to make a site-specific decision using traceable conditions.

Measure repeatably

Use documented measurement locations or a scanning method with defined references. Clean the surface consistently and identify whether the result is remaining thickness, local loss, mass change or profile change. A single hardness indentation or visual photograph cannot describe a heterogeneous wear surface. If a plate is removed for analysis, preserve its orientation and mark the feed and discharge directions.

Any trial must remain within site safety limits and the equipment owner’s inspection requirements. A trial plate should not be operated to perforation or unstable attachment merely to obtain a longer data point. Stop and investigate cracking, looseness, leakage, abnormal vibration or accelerated local loss. Record the stop decision, affected position, observed condition and responsible engineering disposition.

Supplier deviation and first-article control

Require the quotation to list deviations from the drawing, ASTM class/type, customer specification, heat-treatment condition, hardness method, NDT, machining allowance and fixing details. Before serial production, agree whether a first article, pattern inspection or dimensional layout is required. For complex castings, clarify datum strategy and how as-cast surfaces will be measured.

When chemistry, heat treatment, foundry route or critical section changes, the purchaser should decide whether renewed qualification is required. The supplier’s historical grade name is not a substitute for heat-level traceability and ordered inspection evidence.
