Graphite Alloy Steel
Graphite Alloy Steel, a kind of wear-resistant material,is the hypereutectoid steel with ultrahigh carbide content, which will dissolve out the carbide in graphite form after being heated. According to its carbide content, graphite alloy can be classified into different grade, the content range is : 1.3-2.0% carbide, 1.1-1.5% silicon, 0.4-0.8% manganese, 0.4-1.5% nickel, 0.4-1.5% chrome, 0.2-0.6% molybdenum.
Its chemical content can be changed according to its uses,normally including 1.2-1.6% carbide, 0.5-1.5% silicon,0.3-0.4 molybdenum. The Cast microstructures of graphite alloy steel are coarse pearlite and proeutectoid cementite spreading in the crystal boundary. After being heated, graphite alloy steel will be turned to the mixed structures of martensite, pearlite or ferritic matrix and point graphite.
The Graphite Alloy Steel combines the characteristics of steel and cast iron, which has the certain strength, good wear properties and shock absorption, good machinability and low notch seneitivity. In the condition of abrasive attrition, the abrasive resistance of graphite alloy steel is better than high manganese steel, and the costs are lower. Graphite alloy steel is mainly uesed in liners of ball mills,forging die, cold-punching mould, wire-drawing die and blast nozzle.
The alloy composition, inoculant and heat treatment of Graphite Alloy Steel rollers production should be considered.
- Alloy composiotion. Hardness and abrasive resistance can be increased by improving the carbide content so that the the carbide quantities in microstruxture are rised.
- Inoculant. In order to make the graphite can be sepatated out from cast structure, the inoculant will be added in molten steel. The normal inoculant includes tombarthite,rare earth magnesium, silicon iron and calcium silicon.
- Heat treatment. In order to improve the performance of graphite alloy rollers and make the carbide be graphitized. The heat treatment will be applied during the production process. The normal heat treatment technologies are 920℃-950℃ normalizing and 700-750℃ tempering. And the 1100-1150℃ diffusion annealing can be held to changed the shape of carbide.
Graphite Alloy Steel can be used in producing the hot rolls used in blooming mill, and the pony roughing mill of plate slab mill and hot-rolled strip rolling mills. The graphite alloy steel also can be the material of self-lubricating bearings.
